Australia and New Zealand have one of the most comprehensive bilateral free trade agreements in existence (source: DFAT), founded on the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement (ANZCERTA, or the CER Agreement).
Importing from New Zealand to Australia – the process is very simple and outlined below.
Freight options – Air or Sea
When we quote your order we offer either air freight or sea freight options via international company Mainfreight. Mainfreight has very regular services to all Australian sea ports and airports. For smaller items we use international courier services. The pros and cons of each option are:
- Air freight – delivery within days of the order leaving at a higher price than sea freight. Services leave daily.
- Sea freight – delivery within weeks of the order leaving at a lower price than air freight. The Mainfreight sailing schedule is updated weekly here. Services leave weekly.
Once you’ve decided on your preferred option, the focus shifts to making the importing process smooth.
We advise online tracking details when known.
Importing steps
Importing is very simple, it’s a two step process that we assist with.
1. Use an expert to make it easy
If you have a customs broker, freight forwarder or commission and shipping agent, please use their service.
If you don’t have a customs broker we get you to complete a very simple Authority to Act form which takes a couple of minutes and once completed allows Mainfreight to act on your behalf. You are assigned a local contact in your State.
2. Releasing the order to you
Once the order arrives in country, you will be contacted to pay:
- the GST as your order is not charged GST when it leaves Rhino. Please note that this is the same GST rate as if you are purchasing from a local supplier in Australia.
- Customs transaction fee (if applicable) – this is minimal and outlined on the ABF (Australian Border Force) website.
