RHINO Recycled Guards – New Product Development

Recycled guards background

The genesis of the RHINO Recycled Guards product started back in 2020. A customer asked about the composition of our plastic guards and after some discussions it became clear they were planning to recycle RHINO guards into a plastic recycling stream, never to be seen again. Fast-forward and after a lot of collaboration and hard work we found a way to recycle guards and in 2021 we launched the RHINO Recycled guards. In 2023, we further expanded with TWL on a pilot scheme for collecting guards in New Zealand.

Customer demand and expectations are changing

Over time demand for recycled guards has continued to grow. We have also seen expectations increase as customers through the supply chain demand further innovation and commitment to recycling and environmental/social initiatives. Recycled products directly contribute to our own ESG commitments.

Future recycled options

From humble beginnings, the future for RHINO guards made from recycled plastic now has a number of options. To demonstrate our ambition and commitment to innovation, we are outlining the options we are working on to stimulate discussion and work with interested customers.

Recycled – Black Colour

Made from Recycled Guards. The recycled material is from RHINO Guards used on trucks/trailers and offcuts from manufacturing RHINO Guards. Both forms of plastic are returned to a recycler and turned into one colour – Black. This has been live and operational since 2021.

Colour(s): Black.

Part code is “REC”, e.g. “PL12063-REC”.

Mix Recycled-Virgin – Selected Colours

Made from a 50/50 mix of recycled plastic and virgin plastic. The recycled material is from plastic used in other industries and virgin plastic is what we normally use to make RHINO Guards. The recycled plastic is returned to a recycler and blended with virgin plastic and turned into a range of colours. This is in the Feasibility phase now and will likely enter the Develop or Pilot phases in 2025. Colour(s): Selected colours. This product is available in a limited colour range, focused on our most popular options. This approach supports colour consistency with recycled materials and ensures reliable supply.

Colours Released

Part code is “MIXREC-COLOUR”, e.g. “PL12063-MIXREC-RED” for circular recycled Red.

Note: Part codes use the format PL12063-RECMIX-[COLOUR], where the suffix indicates the selected colour matched to circular recycled material.

Circular Recycled – Selected Colours

Made from Guards recycled from one colour. The recycled material will be from RHINO Guards from selected customer(s) trucks/trailers and may be blended with manufacturing offcuts from when we make RHINO Guards. Plastic is returned to a recycler and turned into a specific colour. This is in the Pilot phase in 2025.
